Snorkeling Puerto Vallarta
Snorkeling at Marietas Islands
Costa Azul’s famous Puerto Vallarta snorkeling excursion is to the Marietas Islands in the Bay of Banderas. All equipment is provided. Boats depart for the islands from La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, a 30-45 minute drive south of Costa Azul. The boat ride to the islands takes 30-40 minutes. The travel time is worth it! The Marietas Islands are the premier snorkeling destination in Puerto Vallarta. Designated protected wildlife sanctuary and marine preserve made famous by the famed Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, the waters of the Marietas Islands are home to a dazzling array of sea life. On the ride out to the islands, giant manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, and humpback whales (in season) are common sightings. The Marietas islands are also home to rare species of birds, the Blue Footed Booby - only found two places on earth - the Galapagos Islands and at the Marietas Islands. A highlight of the trip is discovering a private beach through a cave on the inside of the island that is only accessible by swimming! This portion of the trip is optional.
Witness the beauty, harmony and grace of the Humpback whales who inhibit the Bay of Banderas from mid December to the end of March. Humpback whales migrate south from their arctic feeding grounds to breed and rear their young in the warm, protected waters of the bay. A hydrophone will accompany our guides to help share the underwater songs and sounds of the whales and dolphins with you.
